Review of a similar Touring & Training Event

Summary

A recent "Touring & Training in the Holy Land" seminar was a great success. Fifteen participants (usually its 10-25 people) spent 10 days training in Israel, the birthplace of the Krav-Maga (KM). Instruction ranged from basic techniques to advanced topics (including third party protection, fire arms, multiple attackers, military and police subjects and techniques, and more). The training took place in several different and diverse locations, including the Wingate Institute (Israel's national training center for physical education), on top of Masada (a mountain fortress), near the Dead Sea, and along the Mediterranean coast at the Netanya beach (including training on the sand and in the water or in a heated pool in the winter). After training about 5 hours a day, all participants left Israel with more KM knowledge and better technique -- and some even left with a sun tan! Note: Most events take place in June (expected temp. 20-30Cº / 68-86 Fº) and in December.-January, when the temperature is typically around 12-20 Cº (54-68 Fº).

Instructors & Course Material

Eyal Yanilov, Chief Instructor of the International Krav-Maga Federation (IKMF), lead the training. He was assisted by other high level experts from Israel: Gabi Noah, Eli Ben-Ami, Avi Moyal and Amnon Darsa. Regular training sessions were held at the training center in Netanya, which is run by Gabi Noah, director of IKMF-Israel. The topics covered in the seminar included many subjects from the KM system such as basic and advanced self-defense, defending & disarming armed assaults, third party protection (such as a VIP, family member, or friend), dealing with multiple attackers, fighting skills, and our unique training methods which also distinguishes KM from other fighting/self defense systems. We also added several training sessions in order to give the participants more knowledgeable in KM as practiced by military forces and police units. Participants also met with the Sgt. Major S.K. who is the person responsible for KM training in the Israeli Defense Forces.

Training Locations

Training took place in several locations throughout Israel. Netanya, a beautiful city on the Mediterranean coast, served as our home base. Indoor training was at Gabi Noah's studio and at the nearby Wingate Institute (where Israel's top athletes train). Outdoor training included several diverse training locations, including at the beach (self defense and fighting in water and on sand), on top of Masada (a mountain fortress dating back to the 1st century), near the Dead Sea (the lowest point on earth), and in a mango plantation by the Sea of Galilee.

The reason for the varied training locations is because the philosophy of Krav-Maga is to train in different locales, not just the training hall. Training in different locations, environments, and situations is necessary in order to better prepare yourself since you don't know under what circumstances you might have to call upon your Krav-Maga training. Likewise, we train techniques while at different levels of preparedness (fully prepared, partially prepared, and totally surprised). This type of training allows you to safely experience adverse circumstances that you might encounter in real life. You improve your performance ability under stressful situations by bettering your decision-making processes, techniques and fighting abilities. You will then be better prepared to solve different problems and conflicts you might encounter, regardless of the situation.

Touring

Touring was incorporated in the training. We spent 2 days in Jerusalem, Masada & the Dead-Sea. We rode on camels in the Negev Desert, and spent one day in the north of Israel at the Sea of Galilee (including Nazareth and other nearby sites). A special visit was made to the largest private firearm collection in Israel, which features rifles, SMG, assault rifles, pistols and more, ranging from World War I through the present.

Shooting Range

Participants trained at a shooting range in order to enhance their knowledge of and experience KM techniques while defending against threats of firearms --and the gun discharges (of course, only when the defender was no longer in the line of fire). Most participates also took part in a shooting session, experimenting with different kinds of weapons including Israeli ones (Jericho, Desert Eagle, Mini Uzi) and others such as Glock, Walther and more. Some of the participants even had an additional (optional) shooting session, this time in Caesarea that included practical and tactical shooting (combat shooting) as taught to the Israeli security forces.

The Participants

The participants were from 5 countries (Belgium, France, Germany, Holland, and Poland) with varied levels of Krav-Maga training. Some are KM instructors or assistants, some KM students, and some had no prior knowledge in KM. Instruction was suited to each participant's level.

Usually one can find also trainees from many other EU countries as well as from the USA, Australia, the Far-East, Ex-communist countries, South-Africa and more.

Vacation too!

In addition to serious training, we saw this event as a vacation, too! There was plenty of free time in order to relax, take in the sunny weather, and experience a different culture. The feedback from the participants was highly positive. All very much enjoyed the events, the touring and the training - not to mention the sun & beach! The participants had chances interact with the local culture, and every day life, and to see and experience some special events in Israel that took place in the time of their stay, such as Memorial Day and Independence Day.
